Brassica & Turnips

Brassica Greens & Turnip Blend

 Lush greens or sweet fruit...

New Englanders have utilized the versatile Brassicaceae family for centuries.  It should come as no surprise then to find this family highly recommended for whitetail and wildlife gardens.  Aside from our broccoli and brussel sprout blend, we now have brassica/rape available as well as a newly perfected turnip blend.  When you incorporate all of these brassica flavors into one micro-plot/garden you'll create an unmatched regime of protein-packed "fruit" and greens.

This turnip blend is composed of Laurentian Rutabagas, White Egg Turnips, Purple Top White Globe Turnips and Gold Ball Turnips.  This blend is sure to provide some major fall/winter munchies of both fruits and greens.  With fleshy turnips up to 6" in diameter both humans and wildlife are sure to benefit.  Though the egg turnips already have an above-ground growth habit, this blend in general is productive when planted in shallow-tilled soil so fruit grows more above ground, making it more accessible; deer won't have to paw through soil/snow to enjoy these frosty, nutrient-rich treats, and hungry humans will be able to pluck the turnips from the soil with hands only.  Excellent deer wintering area blend.  All in this blend mature in approx. 50 days.

Though small turnips often develop on the plants produced by this brassica/rape seed (Dwarf Essex variety), it is most prized for its lush and tasty "leaves".  It is very versatile and works especially well on a site that is being planted for the first time.  It can also be "turned back under" - tilled into the soil - to provide valuable organic matter for a future planting.  Though classified as an annual, these brassica plants do show signs of regrowth for up to two years.

Another notable character, this brassica/rape sweetens in the fall when hit by frost, making it is very attractive to deer.  It is often used by photographers, hunters or other wildlife lovers in general that want to give something back to their wildlife.  Due to its fast growth and sweet flavor, this brassica works well (even more when you add turnips) in Buffer Plot scenarios, where troublesome wildlife need to be drawn away from your flowers or gardens.  This blend may mature in as early as 40 days with proper growing and site conditions.
